Mortal Shell 2 Best Builds — Shell, Weapon & Tarstones

Updated August 24, 2026 · Checked for the current launch build

Quick answer: A build is the complete package: Shell + primary weapon + sidearm + Seal + Tarstones + skill order. Start with Tiel for safety, Proxima for an aggressive ability loop, Gragu for crit/stagger damage, or Eredrim for boss Break control. Commit materials only after the basic loop feels good.

There is no universal winner. A boss build values single-target control and safe punish windows; an exploration build values healing, crowd control, and kill-triggered effects.

Best build by progression stage

First playthrough

Tiel Shadow / Crit comes online early with Axe & Dagger and can disengage when a route turns dangerous.

Aggressive NG+

Proxima Lightning evolves from a cheap Biosampler loop into Axatana, Duality, Voltaic Crown, and Stasis control.

Safe boss plan

Eredrim Break / Frost uses Shoulder Bash to create the slow-weapon window instead of hoping one appears.

Long exploration

Gragu Crit / Stagger converts enemy-dense routes into Heart sustain, but needs a different plan in empty boss rooms.

Build order that avoids wasted materials

  1. Test the Shell ability. Spend ordinary Shell Points first; do not immediately max Bond with Glimpse.
  2. Test the weapon moveset unupgraded. Make sure you can land its standing light chain and recovery consistently.
  3. Fix cost and safety. Ability-cost, charge-speed, mitigation, or stealth nodes make the loop repeatable.
  4. Add one defining Tarstone. Duality for fast compatible weapons, Stasis for control, or a Break-oriented stone for heavy play.
  5. Add damage last. Critical chance before critical damage; ailment detonation only after you can apply the ailment reliably.

What Balance Patch 1 changes

Sidearms are part of the loop, not a separate build. Official Steam promotional screenshot; Cold Symmetry / Playstack.

Balance Patch 1 increased Great Martyr's Blade attack damage by 20% and Troubadour's Lute attack damage by 100%. It improved light-attack tracking for Axatana, Black Needle, and Clockwork Scythe, removed the minimum Resolve requirement for Caged Hystrix and Triarch Repeater, and buffed several Tarstones. That makes old open-beta rankings a poor basis for a current build.

These pages therefore state the exact role of every recommended component and provide an alternative. If an item gets nerfed, the combat loop should still explain what needs replacing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Mortal Shell 2 build for a first playthrough?

Tiel with a fast weapon is the safest first commitment because Shadow gives you a repeatable disengage. Proxima is the easier alternative if you prefer health and mitigation over stealth.

Can you respec a Mortal Shell 2 build?

Shell Points can be reassigned, but Glimpse investment and equipment upgrade materials are the real commitment. Test the Shell and weapon before spending scarce resources.

Does Mortal Shell 2 have normal strength or dexterity stats?

No. Build identity comes from your Shell skills, weapon and sidearm, Seal, Tarstones, and items rather than a traditional strength/dexterity stat spread.

Which part of a build should I upgrade first?

Fix the core loop first: ability cost or safety, then the weapon and one defining Tarstone, then damage multipliers. A complete low-level loop is more useful than several disconnected upgrades.

Evidence: Build structure is cross-checked against current search leaders including GamesRadar, DayOneFix, and the developer-posted Balance Patch 1 notes. Recommendations are editorial, not an official tier list.
