Mortal Shell 2 Best Gragu Build — Crit & Stagger

Updated August 24, 2026 · Checked for the current launch build

Quick answer: Use Axe & Dagger with Triarch Repeater or Forgotten Crossbow. Start the skill tree with Attunement, then build the supporting loop before spending on optional damage. Role: charged stagger, critical damage, and kill-powered sustain.

VariantWhen it fitsCore packageTradeoff
Heart SustainExplorationAttunement, Anger, Bloodthirst/Bloodlust; fast weapon after Staggering BlowKills refill the engine; add-free bosses remove that supply
Empty-Heart CritLate / expertHunger with Auspicious and Headman's after the core stagger skillsHigher risk and damage; mistakes have no healing buffer

The branches share the same core Shell. Build the first functional loop before copying the late package; several NG+ components arrive too late to solve an early-game problem.

Core and optional Tarstones

Optional slots

Upgrade rule: temper the Tarstone that makes the loop work before a generic damage stone. If you cannot trigger an effect reliably, its spreadsheet ceiling is irrelevant.

Gragu skill priority

OrderSkillWhy now
1AttunementMax first to reduce Staggering Blow's Resolve cost; frequency matters more than a small early damage increase.
2AngerBuilds toward Weak, Fragile, and Break Damage so the punch creates its own punish window.
3ManiacImproves the melee chain that follows the punch and remains useful when a boss will not allow a full charge.
4EscalationOne early point is efficient; finish it after cost, control, and normal melee damage are covered.
5Bloodthirst / BloodlustAdd Heart sustain and the empowered post-Heart attack once the core Staggering Blow loop is stable.
6HungerLate risk-reward choice for the empty-Heart critical route; skip it if you value consistent survival.

See the full Shell skill-tree priority guide for the currency rules and early-versus-late investment checkpoints.

How to assemble the build

  1. Complete Gragu's Heart of Vatra quest and test Revered Heart healing against normal enemies.
  2. Learn Perfect Harden with Vatra's Seal before relying on a long Staggering Blow charge.
  3. Put early points into Attunement and Anger, then add the fast-weapon critical package.
  4. Carry a sidearm for bosses that do not leave enough time to charge safely.

Combat loop

  1. Begin charging Staggering Blow only during a known recovery or behind Harden.
  2. Perfect Harden through the incoming hit, then release the punch for Break pressure.
  3. Use the Duality-powered light chain while the enemy is staggered.
  4. Finish ordinary enemies to refill Revered Heart; in boss rooms, conserve charges because kills may not be available.

Where the build works — and where it fails

Strengths

  • Very high single-target ceiling
  • Self-sustaining in enemy-dense areas
  • Harden and Break mechanics reinforce one another

Weaknesses

  • Long charge is easy to interrupt
  • Healing economy is worse in add-free bosses
  • Low-heart crit play is powerful but unforgiving

Cheaper alternatives

Frequently asked questions

What is the best weapon for a Gragu build?

Axe & Dagger is the primary recommendation for this build. If the alternative in the guide is already upgraded, keep the developed weapon until the new one has its key Tarstone and upgrade levels.

Which Gragu skill should I upgrade first?

Attunement. It fixes the cost, safety, or output of the Shell's core ability before you spend points on secondary effects.

Is this Gragu build good for bosses?

Very high single-target ceiling. Read the weakness section before committing because boss rooms can remove kill-triggered sustain and shorten safe attack windows.

Will this build survive later balance patches?

The exact damage ranking may change. The page focuses on a repeatable combat loop and labels optional components so you can replace a nerfed Tarstone without rebuilding the entire Shell.

Evidence: The loadout and skill order are cross-checked against All Things How Gragu build and DayOneFix build synthesis, then reconciled with the developer Balance Patch 1 notes. Community build rankings are subjective and may change.
